Mad Mick’s Idea: A Golf Course in the Amazon

by Captain Bill

Mad Mick reminisces for the first blog post:

No one knows what possessed me that January day back in 2004 when I jumped up in the texas bar and shouted “Let’s build ourselves a golf course!” Most of the expats there just continued their drink and thought, “Another of Mad Mick’s crazy ideas.” No one took any notice except Bill Grimes, the owner and president of Dawn on the Amazon Tours and Cruises. Bill said, “That’s a great idea, how do we get it going?”

Over these last 4 years more than 60 people from 14 countries have put money into Mad Mick’s crazy idea, and now it’s a reality. The beautifully landscaped 9 hole course stretches over about 2,500 yards. With pars 3, 4, and 5, and with many water and sand traps, it has been described as “very interesting.” Golfers are warned not to retrieve balls from the water traps unless they really are keen on feeding the local wildlife!

The Amazon Golf Course has a small bar serving cold drinks and snacks. Future plans include a swimming pool and a tennis court.

The Amazon Golf Course is open to everyone, but its main aim is to promote golf tourism and to encourage young local people to take up the sport.

Please Help Us.
Iquitos is the biggest city in the World without any road access. This makes getting golfing equipment very difficult and expensive. When you come to Iquitos, please put a few 2nd hand golf balls in your case for us and any other golfing equipment you could donate will help us.

Thank You.

congratulations! it is incredible that we only have eight or nine golf courses in Peru, out of which 5 are in Lima.
I wish you all the best and hope sometime I can go and play in iquitos.
Post more pictures, I am very curious, and can’t imagine a red boa or a caiman walking around.

Hi Ana,

Thanks for being interested. I will post more photos in the next few days. We hope you can visit us in the near future and play a round in the jungle.

Thanks Mike. I will be there soon. Don’t know if I told you. I’m a sports writer, specialized in golf. I plan to write a story about the course.
Can you recommend a good hotel, the best in Iquitos?
Thanks mucho.

Hi Stephan,

The best hotel in Iquitos is arguably the El Dorado Plaza, the only 5 star hotel. A close second is the Victoria Regia.
