My Impression of the Amazon Golf Course in Iquitos Peru

by Alan Sinfield

Much to my dismay I have left Iquitos again, leaving behind my lovely wife, house, business and some truly great personal friends. However, during my brief stay in the beautiful Amazon (which I consider my home) I actually got to see the Amazon Golf Course for the first time.

Mike and Bill are very good friends of mine and when in Iquitos I try to meet up with them every day on the boulevard at lunchtime for a drink and a lively chat (well Bill does not drink, but Mike is not so shy). So one day the other week, Mike said to me “Bill and I are going to the Amazon Golf Course on Saturday morning, how would you like to come”. I said yes and agreed to meet them at 9:00am, even though the only time I have ever been on a golf course before in my life there was a pesky windmill located on hole one.

So, my wife and I met up with Mike and Bill the following Saturday, jumped in a couple of mototaxis and whizzed of to the Amazon Golf Course. 15 minutes later after jockeying and shaking our way through the crazy crowded street of daredevil motorbike riders, families with everything but the kitchen sink on their bikes, large trucks and buses spewing long black trails of exhaust and other mototaxis (who for some reason thought they where in the Indy 500) we left the main road.

We turned off the main road leaving the city behind and within a short distance found ourselves in a beautiful jungle setting. A few more minutes and there was an opening in the jungle, we were there, “The Amazon Golf Course”, what a beautiful surreal setting. Plush open greens, various trees creatively planted throughout the course, a large two-story clubhouse, Wow an actual real Golf Course in the Amazon Jungle.

From the second-story of the clubhouse, I saw a lone golfer putting on the first green…gee it was Wally, one of the architects of the course and clubhouse. Apparently, Wally is still quite the golfer, with a lot of knowledge about the game. The course is huge and all beautifully laid-out, I expect Tiger Woods will play here one day…how could he miss this opportunity. Wally I am sure would like to go a round with him.

I was impressed with the professionalism of the Amazon Golf Course layout and setting, just beautiful…truly a remarkable sight.

After watching Wally hit a few balls at various holes, Mike taking care of some administrative duties and Bill taking a few pictures it was time to leave. Mike asked Wally if he needed a ride to which he accepted. The last thing I recall seeing is Wally squeezed between two large men in a mototaxi as it rickety set off in the morning sun down a dirt road leading to the main road and the beginning of a new day.

After seeing the Amazon Golf Course for the first time I can say I am proud to be a sponsor of this very adventurous endeavor.
