The Amazon Golf Course Trophy, Part One

Here in Iquitos Peru, there has never been a golf course until now. About 99% of the people who live in Iquitos have never seen a golf course, a golf club or even a golf ball. We decided to show the wonderful and very sports minded people of Iquitos what golf is all about.

How could we attract a large number of local people interested in sports to the Amazon Golf Course? We arranged a mini football tournament on May 18th, and made a great mini football pitch to play on. Sixteen teams came to play for the Amazon Golf Course Trophy. Each team consists of six players and the games last for half an hour with a 5 minute half time break.

Over 400 people came to play and watch.

While the games were going on I gave a tour of the course and Wally Lloyd, who designed the course, gave a demonstration and golf lessons.

The eight teams that won in yesterday’s games will come back next Sunday, May 25th, for the quarter finals, semis, and final. Unfortunately the team representing the Amazon Golf Course was eliminated in the first round, 3 to 1.

A great day was enjoyed by all, and a few more Iquiteñans now know about the great game of golf in the amazon.

Check out part two of this series next week. How many do you think will show up for the finals?

Thank you my friends, for all of your encouragement, and support of the Amazon Golf Course.
