December 8th Charcoal Chicken BBQ

On December 8th, Tuesday, during La Purisima, the religious holiday dedicated to praying to the virgin Mary, combined with partying in Punchana while drinking lots of Pilsen, Margarita and the grounds crew at the Amazon Golf Course will host a Charcoal Chicken BBQ, a parrillada de pollo, working and praying to raise money for their own Christmas bonus, knowing I am not giving out a Christmas bonus. Steve McAlear and I donated S/50 soles apiece to get them started, and I am praying to the Virgin Mary right now to encourage you to help them with a small donation also. They are self motivated, smart, hard working, and deserve your support. If you are feeling generous about Christmas, and helping hard working people with much less than anyone you probably know back home, you can funnel your donation through me, or if you are in Iquitos, plan on buying a parrillada ticket for only S/8 soles, and attending the cookout at the Amazon Golf Club on December 8th.

December 12th, Golf Tournament

On December 12th, we are having a golf tournament to determine the annual winner of the Ernst and Edith Schneider Trophy. The tournament will be for all the golf students we have taught at our free Saturday morning golf lessons. They will play a round of 9 holes and be allowed only 8 strokes per hole to keep things moving along at a good speed.

December 27th, Charcoal Chicken BBQ, last Sunday of December

We are making the last Sunday of the month our day to host a special meal every month to raise money to help with the maintenance and improvements of the Amazon Golf Course. On December 27th, the last Sunday of December, we will host an after Christmas Charcoal Chicken BBQ at the Amazon Golf Course clubhouse. The red hot coals will have the good food ready to serve around noon.

December 27th will be a full fun social day of golf, volleyball and soccer or just hiking around the beautiful landscaped park. We will all be there. Please join us. Buy your ticket in advance at Mad Mick’s Trading Post, located near the middle of the first block of Putumayo, #163, at the top of the stairs on the second floor, the Dawn on the Amazon office, #185 Malecon, Maldonado, near the corner of the 1st block of Nauta, on the boulevard, overlooking the river, the Amazon Exporers Club, #101 Nauta, the first door on the first block of Nauta, around the corner from Dawn on the Amazon, windows overlooking the river, or at the Amazon Golf Course.

January 31st, the last Sunday of January, “THE JUNGLE ROAST”

If you can only come to the Amazon Golf Course for one meal all year it should be this one. Don’t miss The Jungle Roast, all you can eat, the last Sunday, January 31st. The Jungle Roast will be the most remarkable meal of 2010, and one of your best days. You will remember and talk about The Jungle Roast all year. If you are living out of Iquitos, fly in special for The Jungle Roast. It will be worth it. Just so you will know what we are doing and where the money goes; someone used balsa wood behind the tile when these showers were built. Bad idea. We have to take a step back and redo the entire bathroom. There are other problems that must be taken care of in the clubhouse but one project at a time.

We took two small coffee trees, a capirona, 4 asai palms, 2 cedros, and 1 copoazu with us to the Amazon Golf Course to plant. Rodrigo “found” three or four species of palm trees we did not have before.

Good progress is being made on all fronts at the Amazon Golf Course. Stop in and see for yourself.

Remember the photo in the article Productive Days At The Amazon Golf Course showed green #6 covered in sand with no grass showing? The photo below shows what it looked like Oct. 31st. Quite an improvement.

We need for some of our members to step up and donate $300 to paint the clubhouse. If three of you kicked in $100 apiece it would be fairly painless.

It is worth coming out to the Amazon Golf Course on Saturday to eat lunch at the Arapaima Gigus Restaurant, only a few hundred meters past the golf course. They catch and clean a paiche every Saturday and serve up the best ceviche in the world.

Second Golf Lesson At the Amazon Golf Course

Michael and Isacc are the star students golfers at the Amazon Golf Course

We hosted 9 golf students at our second Saturday free golf lessons at the Amazon Golf Course from 10 till 12 noon. Join us for your free golf lessons next Saturday. Harry Kelly was the golf professor, assisted by Mike Collis and Margarita our course supervisor. I was impressed by the rate of improvement I witnessed today.

We learned a lot about golf today. Everyone was better at the end of practice than when we started.

The first half hour for the newest students was a classroom discussion about golf terminology, clubs, rules, and philosophy. Then they joined the others at the driving range. Harry taught them the proper way to hold the club and the stance, keep your eye on the ball on the tee, and follow though. There was visible improvment in the next half hour. Then we moved to the practice putting green. Well, putting is difficult. We need more practice, naturally.

Next Saturday we will spend more time on the driving range and practice putting green with the advanced students teeing off to the first green. Today Michael and Isacc, our star students, played the first hole several times after the lessons were over. They impressed me with their enthusiasm for learning the sport of golf. I know they will be good golfers if they keep practicing.

Amazon Golf Course on Channel 23 TV

We received an unexpected return on our newspaper advertising dollars. Channel 23 TV saw the advertisements, thought it was news worthy, and interviewed Margarita, our course supervisor, at 3:00pm today.

The interviewer thought it amazing there is a golf course in Iquitos, and by the questions and Margarita’s answers, promoted the free golf lessons on Saturday, the half price for golf in the month of June, and the overall existence of the Amazon Golf Course.

Mike Collis was given the full credit he deserves for having the vision to begin, build, and promote the Amazon Golf Course, the 50 plus founding Peruvian and international investor-owner-members received recognition, and Margarita put in a little plug for me as course manager.

This is the type of community awareness and recognition we are looking for.

First Golf Lessons At The Amazon Golf Course, Iquitos Peru

First golf lessons at the Amazon Golf Course driving range

Sixteen people responded to our advertisement in La Region, and signed up for the first free golf lessons at the Amazon Golf Course. Three of them will start their first lesson next Saturday, one in two Saturdays, 5 were no-shows.

Today, Mike Sabbe, from Belgium, was the golf professor for seven new golfers taking their first lessons.

The first half hour was a classroom lesson on golf terminology and philosophy, and three quarters of an hour of driving range lessons. Then we followed Professor Mike around three holes as he demonstrated the proper technique and club choice for various swings.

I was impressed with the enthusiasm of our students. They took the golf lessons seriously and are interested to learn the sport of golf.
